At the two
mile mark, the trail rounds a wooded ridge, and an overlook of
Punchbowl Falls. From above, the 40-foot falls are somewhat dimunitive,
until you begin to appreciate the size of the bowl, itself. Millennia
of water action has carved out a perfect basin. The view from
the overlook also provides a good perspective on the massive
old-growth conifers that line the canyon floor above the falls,
and the scale of the canyon, itself.
You will likely
see hikers at the brink of the falls (as in this picture, left
and above the falls), but don't try this. While the side trail
to the base of the falls is an easy trip (next page), the use-path
to the lip of the falls is a dangerous route!
