The canyon quickly became choked with huge, century-old logs from the 1904 Burnt Lake Fire (above) that consumed the ancient forests along the north slope of Zigzag Mountain. Amazingly, the bleached snags from some of these old giants are still standing, while others now form small waterfalls where they block Cast Creek. Matthew and Ted stand under one of the fallen giants (below), and next to a 10-foot thick stump that hints at the magnificent forest that once stood here.
