Salmon River Gorge
April 1983 Expedition
Salmon River Rainforest
The initial approach to Final
Falls began here, near Rolling Rifle Camp, where the rainforest
crowds the river, and the Salmon River Trail meanders at a gentle
grade through the jungle-like understory. Here, the group attempted
a river-level approach to Final Falls. After bushwhacking for
more than a mile up the river, vertical cliffs suddenly rose
from either side of the stream as we approached the gorge below
Final Falls.
After scaling one of the cliffs,
only to discover a sheer 150 foot brink on the opposite side,
it became apparent that a river-level approach would not be possible.
Disappointed, the group returned to the main trail to approach
the falls from above.
