The Fire Grows
By the time backup firefighting units arrived, the fire had spread
to cover more than a mile of the North Portland Bluff, and across acres of
vacant land along the river. The fire had come incredibly close to burning
homes, such as the one attached to this burned greenhouse. We later learned
that the fire command had considered sacrificing the first tier of homes
during this stage of the fire, and moving the fire line back.
