As the trail
enters the Eagle Creek canyon, you can see where old growth conifers
along the canyon floor have been spared from forest fires over
the centuries, compared to younger forests on the upper slopes.
The mix of bigleaf maples and Garry oak on the open scree slope
in the foreground is also typical of the sunny, south and west-facing
cliffs above the gorge. |
